What We Do

Four programs. One mission.

Every Bright Stays program is designed to complement the work of hospital Child Life departments — not replace it. We fill the gaps that exist between medical care and the rest of childhood.

Built around what kids actually need

Each program targets a specific gap that long-term pediatric patients face. Together, they provide something no other organization offers at scale: a full picture of consistent, human-centered support.

🤝

Volunteer Visits

Trained, vetted college volunteers visit long-term patients on a regular, recurring schedule. These aren't one-time drop-ins — they're real relationships. Kids get to know their volunteers, look forward to visits, and experience genuine human connection during one of the hardest stretches of their lives.

  • Weekly or bi-weekly scheduled visits per patient
  • Activities: games, art, reading, conversation, creative projects
  • Volunteers matched to patients by age and interests
  • Full background checks and Child Life orientation required
  • Supervised and coordinated with hospital staff
🎨

Activity Kits

Curated, hospital-safe boxes of crafts, puzzles, books, and games delivered directly to long-term patients. Each kit is thoughtfully assembled for the patient's age and interests — giving them something to do between visits and procedures, and something that feels chosen just for them.

  • All materials hospital-safe (no latex, no small parts for younger kids)
  • Personalized by age group: 4–7, 8–12, 13–17
  • Refreshed monthly for patients with extended stays
  • Funded by donations and corporate sponsors
  • Scalable and easily distributable across hospital units
📚

Academic Tutoring

One of the most overlooked consequences of long hospital stays is academic regression. Kids miss weeks or months of school and often return far behind their classmates. Our tutoring program pairs patients with trained academic volunteers who help them stay on track — so coming home doesn't mean starting over.

  • Volunteer tutors from local colleges (education, STEM majors prioritized)
  • Coordination with patients' schools when possible
  • Core subjects: math, reading, writing, science
  • Adaptive to patient energy levels and medical schedules
  • Available in person or via video call
💻

Virtual Programming

Many long-term pediatric patients are immunocompromised and cannot receive in-person visitors. Virtual programming ensures that no child is left out — bringing enrichment, creativity, and human connection directly to their bedside screen, wherever they are in the hospital.

  • Zoom-based one-on-one hangouts with trained volunteers
  • Live virtual art classes, storytelling sessions, and games
  • Available for all patients, regardless of immune status
  • Especially valuable for ICU and transplant unit patients
  • Flexible scheduling around treatment and rest windows

From volunteer to patient — step by step

1

Hospital Partnership

We work directly with Child Life departments to understand patient needs, access protocols, and scheduling before any volunteer enters the hospital.

2

Volunteer Training

All volunteers complete background checks, hospital orientation, and Bright Stays training on age-appropriate engagement, boundaries, and patient sensitivity.

3

Patient Matching

Patients are matched to volunteers based on age, interests, and program type. Families opt in and can set preferences for their child's experience.

4

Regular Visits

Volunteers show up on a consistent schedule. The same faces, week after week — building the kind of trust and routine that matters to kids in long stays.

5

Measure & Improve

We collect feedback from families, patients, and Child Life staff to continuously improve our programs and document our impact for donors and partners.

Pediatric patients ages 4–17

Bright Stays focuses on children admitted for extended stays of one week or more. Priority populations include:

Children undergoing cancer treatment (oncology)
Patients awaiting or recovering from organ transplants
Children with serious injuries requiring extended rehabilitation
Kids managing complex cardiac conditions
Patients with rare diseases requiring prolonged inpatient care

We work alongside hospital staff — never around them.

Every Bright Stays program is designed and implemented in direct coordination with Child Life departments. We see ourselves as an extension of their team, not a separate entity.

Volunteer access, patient matching, scheduling, and activity guidelines are all subject to hospital approval and adapted to each unit's protocols.
